Why is Balcony Waterproofing Important?

Water damage is a persistent threat to balconies. Even if undercover, a balcony will be still likely be exposed to rain. Without proper waterproofing, moisture from rainwater can seep into cracks and crevices, leading to:

  • Structural Damage: Water infiltration can weaken the balcony, causing cracks and deterioration over time.
  • Leaks: Waterproofing prevents moisture on an exterior surface from leaking through to the interior.
  • Mould and Mildew Growth: Moist conditions promote the growth of mould and mildew, which can affect both health and aesthetics.
  • Costly Repairs: Neglecting waterproofing can lead to expensive repairs down the line.

What is a Liquid Membrane?

A liquid membrane is a flexible, seamless, and highly durable waterproofing solution. Applied as a liquid, it cures to form a watertight layer that adheres to the surface of your balcony. This method has become increasingly popular due to its ease of application and effectiveness.

When selecting a liquid membrane for your balcony, consider factors like compatibility with your balcony’s surface, UV resistance, and ease of application.

Benefits of Using Liquid Membrane for Balcony Waterproofing

Seamless Application Unlike traditional sheet membranes, liquid membranes eliminate seams and joints, which are common weak points for water infiltration. You can ensure you’re achieving a seamless watertight barrier, even in corners and tight spaces.

Versatility Liquid membranes can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including concrete, tiles, and wood, making them suitable for most balcony designs.

Durability Once cured, the membrane forms a tough, resilient layer that resists wear and tear from foot traffic, UV rays, and other environmental factors.

Flexibility Liquid membranes can expand and contract with temperature changes, making them ideal for areas exposed to varying weather conditions. SEMCO Liquid Membrane™ has an unmatched 1300% elongation.

User-Friendly

DIY application is easy with a brush or roller, requiring just two coats with a fast drying time for efficient results.

How to Waterproof Your Balcony with a Liquid Membrane

Preparation

Preparation differs for each substrate, but involves cleaning the area to remove dirt, grease, and debris. If there are any cracks in the existing surface, our Liquid Membrane can be applied as a crack-bridging measure as well! If cracks are wider than 6mm, this would require some fabric reinforcement first.

The best part about using SEMCO Liquid Membrane™ is that there’s no need to use a primer. It has excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates, so you can apply it directly to your balcony area.

Application

Use a brush, roller, or sprayer to apply the membrane in even coats of 0.75mm. Pay extra attention to corners and joints to ensure complete coverage.

Drying

Coats can take from 45 minutes to 2 hours to dry. You’ll know it’s dry when once you can touch the surface without leaving a fingerprint impression. Curing time depends on temperature, humidity and airflow, however typically initial cure is within 6-7 days.

So, the verdict...
